The CFIA is a non-profit organization based out of downtown Brevard, NC (near Asheville) that focuses on the “natural education” of our community’s youth.  By teaching children about the ins and outs of our local wildlife species, they develop a deeper appreciation for our unique mountain eco-systems and the role they can play in preserving them.  Our year-round, classroom-adapted wildlife programs are adapted to suite any age range or educational need and may be conducted on-site or at a specific habitat.  All programs are $2 per person and typically last an hour and a half, depending on group size and topic. Please check out a few of our most popular programs listed below and give us a call to set up a date.  Together, we can get the children of our community outside and learning about the environment around them!

Scale Tales - This up-close look at our local reptile species will challenge everything you think you may know about our reptilian friends.  Live specimens will allow the group to get especially close!

Birding For Beginners  - Sure, we see birds every day, but do you really know what they are? This fun, active program will introduce our local and migratory species and how they communicate.

Skins and Skulls  -  Fur, teeth, claws and more. Take a closer look at our local mammal species and learn about how they hunt, hide and interact with each other every day.

Wonderful Wildlife – Animals are all around us, it just takes a little “know-how” to find them!  This hands-on program will get the students up close and personal with local species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects.

River Critters -  Is it a bug? Is it a tadpole? Our local creeks, rivers and streams are bustling with activity. It just takes a keen eye to spot it! We’ll do macro-invertebrate studies in this hands-on program.

Water, Water Everywhere  - Used primarily as an introduction to River Critters, this look at the water cycle and water conservation will test the group’s knowledge about where our water comes from.

Nature Games  - Just because they like to play outside doesn’t mean they can’t learn in the process! These fun, active games will teach the group about wildlife habits and get the kids running and thinking.

A Wild Walk  - This program is open to whatever natural habitats you have around your area. Topics may include trees, birds, wildflowers, or anything that you encounter on your trek through the woods!

Which Way Do We Go?  - We’ve all been lost before, so this program is designed to teach groups about the importance of orienteering through map reading and compass work. Not intended for very

small children.
